If a vehicle is used for transporting school children, “On School Duty” should be written on the bus in Malayalam or English on a white background.
As per Rule 191 of the Kerala Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, a school bus should keep a first aid box inside it.
Every school bus window should be fitted with horizontal grills for better safety.
A fire extinguisher should be fitted inside every school bus.
A windshield should be fitted in every school bus.
There should be sufficient space provided in the seats for keeping students' bags.
A bus attendant should be appointed on the bus to take care of school children.
A parent or a school authority should be permitted onboard the bus for safety/emergency purposes.
School authorities should not appoint a driver who has committed a traffic-related offence more than once a year.
A record showing details of the school bus's students should always be kept inside the bus.
Every school bus must have a minimum width of 3050mm and a minimum height of 355mm.
School buses should be painted golden yellow.
A speed-limiting device should be installed, with the speed limit set at 40 km/hr.
