Supreme Court Bans Liquor Sale on Highways


Supreme Court bans liquor sale on state and national highways to ensure road safety. Also it was said by the apex court that all the existing licences of alcohol distribution shops will be made invalid from April 2017.

The strict decision was taken due to the rising number of accidents on highways. And it was found that easy availability of liquor was one of the major reasons for highway accidents. Many NGOs supported this decision for the sake of road safety.

This decision by the Supreme Court is a huge setback to stocks like United Spirits and United Breweries. It also affects the morning trade of Global Spirits, the global leading producer of alcoholic beverages.

According to Supreme Court's judgement, no alcohol stores should be located within a radius of 500 meters of the highways.
