Child Tossed Off School Bus Before Driver Pulls Away
Edmonton: In a video obtained by Global News, the driver appears to shove a child off their school bus. The students yell in anger and disbelief while the incident took place.
The video taken by one of the students clearly shows the driver standing up and grabbing the boy’s backpack and throwing it off the bus. The student is pushed out of the door and the driver says, “get off.”
Joanne Lynch, a mother of 12-year-old and 10-year-old who travel on the bus said, “My kids were scared … they were all scared, and that’s not right,”
The reason behind the incident was not clear.
“I know, from what my children say, swearing was going on the bus,” Lynch said.
“The little boy got kicked off, questioned it, and then, from the video you’ve seen, his bag was grabbed and thrown out and he was grabbed and thrown out,” added Lynch.
Her son said that another boy was also kicked off from the bus.
“I’m not really sure what was before, but it was wrong. No kid should have to go through that and be just dropped off at an undesignated stop and left there.”
From the video, children can be heard yelling and crying on the bus.
“You can’t just do that! No!” shouts one. “He doesn’t know how to get back home!” “What are you doing?”
“He’ll find a way,” says another
One of the kids says: “he pushed him down the stairs.”
The family that provided the video confirmed that the incident happened on the afternoon bus ride from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary/Junior High School on Monday, May 25.
“My son called me from the bus … you could hear he was very upset,” said Lynch. “I tried to stop [the driver] when my kids got off the bus and he slammed the door in my face and drove off.”
Both Edmonton Catholic and Edmonton Public Schools contract some bus services through Cunningham Transport Ltd.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Edmonton Catholic said: “The Edmonton Catholic School District’s first priority is the safety of all students. We will not tolerate abuse of any form and will investigate to ensure this does not happen again.”
Lynch told that the driver had been on her children’s route for one month. She also told that the Cunningham has confirmed that they will look into the incident. They have already taken the driver off the route.
“I think he should not be driving a bus.” Said Lynch.
